The PROOF site is split into three main sections:
rampant robots, psychotic cyborgs and crazed computers. While it's usually
pretty clear when a film or TV program belongs in the latter category,
film and TV program makers often get confused between robots and cyborgs.
For the purposes of this site, I have tried to make a clear distinction
between the various terms, as follows:
Robot |
I have considered the term robot to mean a wholly
artificial construct. (It may have some biological components, but these
are not 'essential' to its being.) The 'Rampant Robots' section therefore
includes androids (man-like robots), fembots
and gynoids (woman-like robots) and automata
(or automatons, whichever you prefer) and other mechanical
devices.
|
Cyborg |
The 'Psychotic Cyborgs' section only includes 'true' cybernetic organisms,
i.e. constructs which are part human/part machine, or humans (or other
creatures) enhanced by the use of devices or machines. |
Because of the above, you'll probably find that some films/programs/robots
and so on may not where you expected them to be. For example,
Daleks and the eponymous Robocop both appear
in the 'Psychotic Cyborgs' section, not in the 'Rampant Robots' section.
