The alien Taelons (or 'companions') have landed on Earth, established diplomatic relations, and have used their advanced technology to solve many of mankind's problems, including famine. However, a small band of human 'resistance fighters' refuse to believe the Taelons are completely altruistic, and are determined to uncover their secret.

The series featured robot alien probes which could transform themselves, and replicate miniature versions of themselves.

After their mother dies, two brothers and their sister receive an offer of an 'electric grandmother'. After visiting the robot factory, they select their 'custom options', then take the grandmother home. While the two brothers accept the grandmother, the sister is resentful.
